OUTBREAK IN CHRISTCHURCH

CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 16
A fire of unknown origin destroyed l a large part of the plant and premises of the Chivers Confectionery ICo., Ltd., of 246 St. Asaph (Street, this evening. The building, which was of brick arid wood, was the proerty of the estate of Elizabeth White, and was insured -in the Norwich Union Insurance Society. The amount is unaiscertainable. ahe stock and plant were insured for £2OOO with the Alercantile and General Insurance Co. - Nobody was in the building when the fire broke out and everything appeared normal when the last employee left at 5.60 p.m. The alarm was given by a passerby ishortly after 6 p.m., but the fire was then burning strongly. The highly inflammable contents fed the fire, so that it quickly increased in violence. The greater part of the factory was gutted and most of the machinery damaged beyond repair. The brigade subdued the fire quickly, hut the rapid spread of the flames caused damage before the fire couiti be checked.
FIRE AT AUCKLAND
EXPLOSIONS PRECEDE OUTBREAK

AUCKLAND, Oct. 16
A fire in the city late to-night (gutted the third! floor of the fivestorey brick building at the corner of Albert and Durham istreots, occupied by Reid and Twiname, manufacturers and importers, and S. S. Smith arid Co., Ltd., manufacturers’ tagents. An explosion on the third floor preceded the flames. It blew out the corner windows. The brigade was just checking ’this outbreak when another occurred elsewhere on the same floor. The fire was under, control just before midnight.
