(U.P.A. by Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Roe. May 21, 5-30 p.m.) BRISBANE. May 21. At the opening of the Queensland Amateur Turf Club’s new course at Doombon to-day, the principal event, the Doomben Newmarket, resulted as follows: —Wollun 7.2. (Hayes) 1: Closing Time 9.2, FBartlc) 2; Noel Boldat 7.0. (Jcrrovs) 3. Fifteen started. Won by a head and two lengths. Time, 1.12).

The finish was exciting, Wollun, a mystery horse from Armidale, winning in the last stride. His vider lost his iron and seemed to lose control, jamming Closing Time on the rails in the last furlong.

A protest was lodged, llartle saying that his mount wa s badly hampered. Wollun’s rider admitted losing his iron, and hampering Closing Time, but the stewards dismissed the protest.

Mr. Jamieson, the owner, thereupon decided to take Closing lime and Voyager back to Sydney. Commentators suggest that Wollun would have won the race anyway il Ids •rider had not lost his iron.

The Aintree Grand National winner, Kellsboro’ Jack, was bought by Ambrose Clark when lie saw the horse a s a two-year-old running .in llln rough in Ireland. He left him there to graze for another two years or so, and did not put him into training until he was a live-year-old. Then he won a couple of hurdle races, but in bis physique and character he was obviously cut out lor a ’chaser. He had previously done well over the course, hut this was his fh slat tempt at Grand National honours, A writnv in the London "Daily Telegraph” recounts what lie declares to be a perfectly true story as to how Airs. Clark came to own the horse at all. Mr. and AH's. Clark’s_ trainer. Ivor Anthony, made up his mind that Clark was a very unlucky man, and one day he said to him. “Y°u aro very unlucky; I wish you would make a- present of Kellsboro’ Jack to our wife.” Clark might have been slightly surprised .at the- request, but be evidently tbought it over, for lie later said to- his wife, ‘‘Give ni 0 a pound and I’ll give you Kellsboro’ Jack.” Airs Clark promptly produced 1 the pound, and that is -how she is to-day tlie proud owner of the Grand National winner.
