People will he able from the stand to obtain a continuous clear view of the straight. The main evenf of the programme i.s described as the Doom ben Newmarket, in which. 19 horses from all the Eastern States arc engaged, including Closing Time and Lady Linden. The latter was the winner of the- 1932 Victorian Newmarket.

NOTES AND NEWS

King Musk, by Musltatoon from Queen Arch, is making steady improvement under E. S. Groats’ charge at Ellerslie and is a, likely-looking sort. This two-year-old lias not had much racing experience, but is bred on sound galloping lines, and should eventually males good. He is more solidly-built than the majority of Mu-ricetoon’s. progoncy and should devolop into a fine three-year-old.

Colossical, who is engaged in the Ojorohanga Handicap, six furlongs, at Te Rapa to-day, is a three-year-old gelding by Colossus from Brightly by Gazolcy from Morie, by Maliaki, from,Maude, tho dam of Mahutonga. Colossical raced several times earlier in tho season without getting into the money, hut at tho recent Wairarapa meeting ho accounted for tile Maiden Hack, seven furlongs, with 8.7, running the distance in 1.28. On the second day lie won the Mokoia. Hack, of a similar distance, with 8.2, in 1.271 2.5. Colossical is trained by his owner, Mr P. A. Finley, at Trentham

Mas tor Norval ran two excellentraces at the Avondale autumn mooting, winning the Chevalier Handicap, one mile, with 8.0, while, with 7.10, on the second day, after getting chopped out at the start, and losing a lot of ground, he got up in time to head-boat with Holly Lu 'in tho Alt. Roskill Handicap, of similar distance. Master Norval is engaged in the Rangicoto Hack Handicap at To Rapa today, and with 9.0 should again be ver.y hard to boat.

Phiakuo, a gelcfing by .Raceful, showed: rpiite a lob of speed in tlja Rosebanlc Handicap, seven furlongs, at the recent Avondale meeting. He made a. fast run on the outride abouthalf] a mile from home and led into the straight, hub he then t:red, finishing fifth. Tic did no show up on the second day, hut if ho reproduces his first day form in tho Maiden Handicap at Te Rapa to-day, he should bo in tl.b picture, for he has a furlong less to cover. >

Prince of Orange, who claims an engagement in the Te Kuiti Hurdle BaceVfc Te Rapa to-day, was schooled oyer six flights of hurdles on Tuesday morning, giving a first-rate display. This horse is a clever fencer, and, though burdened with 11.11 in G;trace mentioned, his prospects look exceptionally good. A. Julian is giving tho Vallcyrian geldhig a solid preparation and he is now a (better conditioned horse than when he contested tho Brighton Hurdles at Easter time. The fact that Prince of Orange is one of-the favorite- selections for tbb {Great Northern Hurdles will causa his running at Te Rapa to bo keenly followed by racegoers.

Dust Up, wlio i'a...entored for theMaidieiu Handicap at Te Rapa to-day, was purchased as a yearling at the Trentham sales in 1929 by Mr H. Tims, of Te Awaiuntu, and is by Night Raid from (Petal Dust, by -Martian from Per Anna. Petal Dust is therefore a full-sister to the Great Northern Derby Mart, arm a. Dust Up got hurt early in his career and has not yet raced, but theno is no doubt that he is beautifully bred.

Diversion showed up for ■ a good (way in the Rosebank Ilandcap,- seven furlongs, at Avondale, last month, and! at Pukokohe he looked to be t*:e winner of the Pukekawa Handicap halfway down the straight, but then weakened and as beaten -info thirdplace,at the finish. ITe should he improved as the. result of those efforts and! should again show up at Te Rapa.

The Mato mate hack Cliief Lap claims an engagement at Te Rapa to-day, and if produced at his host ho will take a lot of heating. At his last start Chief Lap was beaten a neck by Gay Broney in a six-furlong race at Tauranga, and that form will ensure him getting strong support at To Rapa. He is a. solid type elf hack, who usually begins well in his races, and this will bo an advantage to him at Te Rapa, where the field is likely to be of unusual dimensions.

Tradesman is reported to he going along nicely at. To Rapa; and after his recent success at the Avondale meeting he will have plenty of support for the Stewards’ Handicap at To Kuiti to‘~dav. Tradesman has previously won On this course, and! fie fact Dint the going nvill he ort the soft side will alsm he in his favor.

On several occasions ibis season Dark Marble has shown promising form around the country meetinos, and in storied in .the Oternhanen Han .•Venn at the Te Kuiti meeting he is I;Lrlv to heat more than bents Inn. stage of the race. This hack is partial to so-ft going and should be worth following during the next lew months.—Star.

Good Hunting, who has boon very sore during the prevalence of hard tracks, had conditions to his liking in the Borough Handicap at Vanganui, in which now lower than half the acceptors were scratched. Ho began well, and, leading the favorite. Arena, to flic straight, had her well beaten, at the finish. Arena just failed to stall off King Thomond for second. Chief Marionette was a, good fourth, followed by La Crown, Boon, and Diagano. The winner, who recently went up to G. W. New at Avapuni, showed his best form and gave nothing a chance. Chief Marionette went hack on the turn and looked a hit unlucky, and Diagano, after drifting early, showed plenty of pace. Arena had every chance.

High Commissioner has raced well over hurdles during the present season, and at his last start he annexed the Bombay Hurdles, one mile and five furlongs, at the Franklin meeting at Puk-ekohc, winning by six lengths (from Free Air. Ho is engaged at Te Rapa to-day and should take some heating in the Te Ivuiti Hurdles.

Miss Lulu ran a good race in tho Rosebank Handicap at Avondale last, month, when slio was just beaten in the last bit by Sweet Whisper, aflyr being prominent all the way. On the wccond day Miss Lulu was just making her run .at the entrance to the straight when she fell. If she had stood up she would have li-en very troublesome. Miss Lulu is engaged in the Maiden Handicap at To Rapp, to-day.

One of the best sprints at FJlers!,ie on Thursday morning was registered by Chief Cook and Tarporiey, who bleat*United over half a mile m 50 4-ssec. The first-named pair were on terms at the finish, Chief Cook doing his work well.

Although only five horses went to tho post in. the Grandstand Steeples at. Wanganui, it was an interesting race, four of the five runners being bunched at.the second last fence. Fince Acre made the running for a round, when superior jumping and judicious riding enabled Birkbeck to take the load. Fine Acre ran to the front again down the hack the last time, but at the second last fence Birkbeck jumped right away from Fine Acre', who blundered. Jumping the last fence well, Birkbeck came on to win without any trouble, but Fine Aero only just scrambled home from Ac re rate', with Jen fourth. A. McDonald rode a splendid race on the winner, saving every inch of ground. His mount also" jumped exceedingly well■ Fine Acre jumped high and also' ran out a bit at the fences, but'ho went an excellent race. Acrovato covered more ground than anything else and her showing was very good. .Ten is still a hit sore, but put up a. good honest race.

Sunny Sky was very lame behind after running an easy six furlongs at Ellerslie on Thursday in 1.25 1-s'. It is believed that she has ricked a muscle, and A. D. Adams is afraid ho may have to throw her right out of work. ’ - ' •

To have the race comfortably won and then lose to an unsuspected late run by High Faintin’ on the inner was the fate of Consent in tfre Century Hurdles. The lapse cost his rider £lO. on being brought . before the stewards. Consent led all the way, and jumping fa 4 st and cleanly, soon had the field strung out, the pace boing very solid. Advrntus lay handiest to Consent, whoso break on him at any time did not exceed three or four lengths, High , Faintin’ and Henry of Navarro do(ng best of the others, the former of this pair being fairly well back - eaiTy. Adventns tonic on Consent six furlongs from home, and ran into the five furlongs feneo with him, hut Consent got away on landing, and ran to the fence on. the homo, turn just, clear of Ad vent us* and- High Faintin’, wjtli Henry of Navarro handy. They jumped the fence close to the leader, who again got away a bit on landing, but Adventns was on bis outer at the last, with High Faintin’ sticking to the rails. Consent, came on clear from the last fence, but his rider, casing up under the impression that all danger was over, lost to High Faltin’ on the inner by a. bare head. Henry of Navarre was a creditable third, with Adventns fourth, then Callamart, Ituanui, and Miss Hastings. Consent, of course, should have won, and his performance was very good all round. At the same time, High Faintin’ gave a fine exhibition, and, of course, was staying on. A feature was the very forward showing of the fresh horse, Henry oT Navarre. Adventns ran a good race and, taking on Consent, beat, him. Callamart was always well hack, but was running on at* the finish.

View Halloo, always well placed, won very decisively in the Empire Handicap at AVanganui, whereas the favorite, Aga Khan, was one of the last out of the straight and finished fourth. Beacon Fire, Arisus, Princess Bell and View Halloo were most prominent early, but going out of the straight Chopin rushed up to the front and was clear down the back stretch' from Princess Bell, View Halloo, Beacon Fire and Awaken. Aga Khan improved his position on. the. homo turn, hut Chopin and View Million wore followed into the straight by Beacon Fire. Princess 801 l and Awaken. View Halloo came on for a comfortable win, Chopin decisively beating Beacon Fire for socbv Cape Fair, Princess Bell and Awaond, with Aga Khan fourth, followed ken. The winner gave nothing a chance at the finish, scoring in bis best style. Chopin ran an honest race, and. considering the use Voitre made of him, stuck on well. Beacon Fire _ran creditably without looking dangerous, and Aga Khan’s race was also creditable considering be was a wav back last early.

British Columbia has a lot oi' speed and he has been showing it in all his races during the lasi; .few weeks. At Ellerslie l;e was only beaten by a 1 1 call by Ham [iron Park in 1 fie open sprint on the second day, while at Avondale, in ibe Railway Handicap, Greek Gold defeated him by a similar inargjin. Jle was again beaten by a bead by All Humbug in the Flying Handicap at Eguiont, but in ihc Mokoia Handicap, on tbo second day, won. easily by three lengths. Those five I'd all. six-furlong races, and il he .is taken to the To. Kuiti meeting at To Rapa to-day be should again be in tbo picture in the- Stewards’ Handicap.
