IMPROVED ATTENDANCES INTEREST IN APPLE PACKING There was a gratifying continuance of public interest yesterday in the •Poverty Bay Winter Show Association’s eleventh annual fixture which is in progress at the N.Z. Shipping Co.’s store in Grey street. This attendance yesterday morning was double what it was last year, while in the afternoon and evening sessions useful increases were also recorded'. Mingling with tho crowds it was possible to hear only the warmest admiration expressed for the many excellent exhibits.

A very interestond visitor yesterday was Mr K. S. Williams, ALP., who has just returned from the corresponding .fixture at, Whakatane. Air Williams expressed surprise at the exceptional size of the pumpkins exhibited, and stated that he had seen nothing at the Whakatane Show to como anywhere near them. It was announced yesterday that prize money for all classes except iu the schools’ section would be payable at the secretary’s oilico at the hall during any session to-morrow. The Show will be, oponn to-day and to-morrow during tile following sessions : 9.30 a.m. to noon, 2to 5 p.m , and 7 to 10 p.m. YESTERDAY’S JUDGING Particular interest was displayed last evening in the open apple-pack-ing class. In this connection, tho association expresses its thanks to Mr P. G. Bell for tho donation of five cases of apples which were used :n tho competition and are to be sold for the benefit of . the associaion’s funds. The class drew four competitors and resulted as follows : Aliss Al. Poole (82pts.) ... 1 IT. S. Cutts (76;'{pts.) ... 2 Trevor Bell (721-pis) .... 3 The competition was judged by Air <P. Everett who explained that 30 points were allotted for the time factor, the full points being awarded if rii© packing was completed in four minutes. For every minute over four five points wore deducted, Air Evcrobb mentioned. With several of the competitors, as it happened, there was a matter of only seconds difference in the time occupied, so that; tho points lmd to be awarded fractionally .

"The winner was responsible for a votv fine pcrlormunce, especially considering lmr limited experience”, added MiriEverett. “The packing as a whole, was of a higher standard than last year, though the lime was not nearly so fast.” The remaining class lor aeroplane models was decided yesterday also, this being the open class for fuselage flying models which drew seven entries. The judges were Messrs W A Collett and J. G. Nolan. Actual flying was the test in. this class and *- model entered by Johns and Church annexed the first- prize, this plane remaining in the air lor 20 seconds, and covering a distance of about Jo yards. C. V. Rowell was awarded' the second prize. Two special prizes, donated by Mi c. TV. Armstrong, president ol the ussocation, were awarded! in this see Hon. The first, for most points (in the open, classes, was won by Johns and-Church, while the other, open to competitors in the classes lor boys under 11, was won by Joe Mooro. FRUIT SECTION PRAISED High praise for the fruit, exhibits at the show was voiced yesterday by the judge, Mr P. Everett- During tas three years in Gisborne, he had not seen a display of fruit to approach it. Some of the apples were very near perfection and a immbe were probably of tho highest standard ho had ever judged.
