MAJESTIC
STEELE RUDD’S “ON OUR SELECTION
Those who have read the uuvcl by Steele Rudd are awaiting with special interest tli e screen version, “On Our Selection/’ which opens at the Majestic, to-day. The story of the hardships and humour of the hie of a family in the Australian backblocks is full of comedy,. interspersed with touches of pathos. Vlmiomeval success has attended tho sciceiling of the production in Australia, whilst extended seasons have hecu necessary throughout New Zealand. This modern story of Dad, Mum, Dave, and all the rest of the bighearted Australian family, characteristic of the pioneer families of Urn “outback”, is a triumph for Australian film production. There is an abundance of natural comedy with <> touch of pathos here and there,, and the love study of a young couple wh 0 win through to happiness. The central figure of the story is “Dad”, the hardy old settler who has been ruined by drought time and again, only to come up smiling, until at last fortune smile s on him Bert Bailey is in the principal role, and he ;nakes it sparkle from start to finish. The “chips of the old block’, with the* exception of a charming daughter, are nothing to write home about as an intellectual family, and the maimer in which these artists play the simple country yokels is really clever, for they provide much of the humour—after old “Dad, ol course. “Dad’s” language is not always of the drawing room character and upon occasions it lands him in some" awkward situations.’
The supports include -a; Sydney Bridge" picture “Sympathy An Steel”., and a 'Mickey- Mouse cartoon. Two separate- matinees 1 will he held today,’ 0n,2 at;2 p.'m.i for Chaplin ,in •“City Lights”—and one at 3.45 p.m, for ’“Oir Our Selection.”: . ;
