«'A noblo act <rf self-sacrifice,” was how the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P., described the action of an unknown subscriber to the Mayor’s Relief of Distress Fund. A letter addressed to the Mayor, and marked “Private,” was handed in at the City Council office in the late afternoon. The writer, apwoman, explained in a few simple words that sho had saved to 'purchase a winter coat, but that, in view of the Mayor’s appeal oh, behalf of the sorely distressed people, she had decided' to do without the coat and devote the money to. the relief fund. She preferred that it he expended in procuring clothes and shoes for women and children. Attached to, the letter was a £5 note and five £1 notes—£lo in all. In her letter the woman did not disclose her identity. Another woman wrote to the Mayor explaining that she would bo out of the city when the collection was being taken up, and she forward ed the sum of £1 as h.er contribution. ~ \ Mr. Sullivan sai'd the acts of these ' two women were beautiful examples to all. Their loving self-sacrifice enobled them and the city to which they belonged., ' -• " ■;
