The rise and fall i s no new thing. The Public Works Department has records of such phenomenon occurring previously. On No\ ember 2,. 19.09, there was a rise and fa.ll in Lake Tanpo of eight inches every eight minutes. On July 12, 1922 the, waters rose and fell 7ft, at intervals just under ten minutes. This latter occasion was. during «• period when the Tanpo region was buffering from a prolonged scries of earthquakes, but whether they or iho atmospheric variations, caused the phenomenon, is open ,to discussion. Other risings and fallings of three or four inches have been recorded op several occasions.
