NEW POWER SOURCE

EFFORTLESS SPIN OF TURBINI

WHISEI

NEW YORK, Dec. 9

A small turbine wheel-which spins continuously without any apparent motivation is a centre of interest for large numbers of visitors to the National Exposition of Power and Media nin 1, Engineering here. . The wheel, about, three inches in diameter, is supported horizontally in a glass bulb connected by two long glas-g tubes with another glass bulb below, which is half tilled’with water. The glass bulbs and tubes and a. strip of cheesecloth constitute the entire machine. The fact that the whole, pro-, cess i s in full .view .adds .to the fascination of watching it and makes it. apparent, that no hidden, source of, energy is used to make, the odd little machine work.

Mr George IT. Gibson, who put it together, described how the turbine wheel is- kept- revolving withoutany visible source of power. This is done by invisible vapor from the nozzle of a glas s tube leading from the bulb containing water, which blows against the .buckets on the rim of the wheel with a spouting velocity of 600 feet a second and makes th e wheels spin. The yap or. is generated by the warmth of the surrounding, atmosphere, acting upon the water in the lower bulb. The -other tube, which opens into th 6 bottom of the upper bulb, is in two- coils, one wrapped in cheesecloth • . ' ' A-Mr Gibson said the temperature, d,ilf£erei»ce between t-hei water bulb and. the wrapped coil is about three degrees Fahrenheit and that, the plant rated lone '{. aixty-thousaii'dth ‘ horsepower. . -ft.

- The Ifttlc plant was constructed to illustrate the power sources .of. .the atmosphere in- a way similar to that of the , sea-thermal plantinstalled at Santiago, Cuba, at a cost of several million dollars, Mr Gibson said., • v Many of . the exhibits'at .the exp.o--sition show, the • remarkable progress jpade as -a result of research .work during The last few years, -> v -
