POET LAUREATE SEEKS PERFECT PEACE; LONDON Doc. 30. Ten weeks in Arizona desert will he spent) by tho Poet Laureate (John Masefield) who desires, above all, to find perfect- peace. The roar of aeroplanes annoyed Air. Masefield so much that he left his country home in Oxfordshire. Now he will seek a spot away from such noise, free from traffic and rowdy people—and that will bo a desert.
Yesterday he sailed for Now York with his wife, to entrain for Arizona and "lead the simple life in a bungalow in tho desert.” ‘T will write or read for tho 10 weeks I am there.” he said. “I know I shall find inspiration in the desert. After his holiday, Mr Masefield may give readings from his works in the principal American citie'3.
“About how many brands of tobacco do you reckon ;there are. alt told?" enquired a Dunedin man of his smoke merchant. “Couldn't say.” replied the latter, “but- my encyclopedia says about 500."’ “And all smokeable,” went on the customer with a laugh. “Wouldn’t care to her. on that,” said the .tobacconist. --“As you know there are brands 'mild enough for a baby and others strong enough to make your hair curl." "Buy. surely," remarked the customer. “there must be brands that are comparatively free from nicotine?” “I know of only four like' that,” said the tobacconist. “And where do they come from?” asked the customer. “They’re grown righr here in New Zealand.” replied the. tobacconist, “and toasted in the course of manufacture.” Tjiat takes., the poison out of them and leaves thorn sweet and fragrant—also quite, harmless.
