R.S.A. : DEFEAT NOMADS WANDERERS BEAT CASH STORES CLOSE FINISHES RULE ___ ) A further round in tbo 'Thursday competition was played at the Oval yesterday, two first innings victories being recorded, R.S.A. defeating Nomads by one run and Wanderers heating Cash Stores by 49 runs. In both mu belies there were keen struggles for ouWight victories and play was continued right up to 6.40. R.S.A. v. NOMADS Batting against Nomads, R.S.A. made the low score of 42. Duncan and Hogg, with eight each, doing best with the bat. The last fivo Wickets fell without a run. being secured. Sharp secured six for 25, taking three wickets in bis last over, wlfilo 0 Slado obtained the very good analysis of four wickets for seven runs. R. Stewart and McMahon were associated in an opening stand for Nomads for 27 runs, Stewart making 12 and McMahon 10, but then the side collapsed and the last available wickol flell at 41. 0. R. Olsen obtained four for 16 and E. Harvey three for IS.

R.S.A. improved considerably in their second strike, Harvey batting freely for 33 (five fours), Graham making 10 in three hits and then a stand between E'gnall and Duncan putting on 36 for the fifth wicket When Bignall was dismissed for 31 (five fours) the innings was declared closed with fivo men out for 100. Duncan carried his bat for 16 which included three boundaries. Sharp again bowled well and obtained the five wickets which fell at a cost of 44 runs

With onlv half an hour to obtain 102 runs. Nomads appeared to have l/ittlo chance of victory, hut they made a fine attempt. The first wicket fell at three, but McMahon and Slade were then associated in a dashing stand which added 58 in a very short time. McMahon then left for a valuable 10 and at 68 Slade was unluckily run out. He monopolised the scoring and found the boundary with powerful strokes to both sides of the wicket. His 47 wa s made up of 11 fours and three singles. -T. Stewart and Morley added a further 18 runs before stumps, but time *wa s called wlitlii the total 86 for four wickets. Stewart bib three fours in bis 15 not out and Morley’s 11 not out included two boundaries. Scores were as follows :—-

CASH STORES Having first use of Hie wickets. Wanderers made a good start against Cash Stores, P. Dow and W. Carson sending up 54 before the latter was out for a sound 22 (three fours). Martin collected 14/in quick time, while Do.w ran his score to 59 beiore hein’g bowled by Huesfcon, ' tie hit eight houiidafies and batted very nicely, though he had an escape early,, sniekfner ’ope'just over tlie keeper’s head. Carr gathered in’ 14 and' Parkin’s 11 included a sixer and a four, the last wicket' falling at 141. Stewart howled very nvoll to take seven for-57 m 13.2 overs and Hueston secured two for 1.6. L. Scholium sent down some good overs, but had- little luck.

L.-and G. Scholium gave Cash Stores a useful start by sending up 28 before a wicket fell. Clem, who had been in trouble to Carson’s spinners, nvas then skittled by that trundler. Len Scholium went on to notch a good 35, though he was twice missed off Carr, tlio second a, very easy chance. He hit seven fours all told. G. File hatted briskly for 10, hut the total was only 71 nvlien the last pair came together, these being J. J. MacDonald and D. Owen. Both men brought off some neat strokes, and the total reached 92 before Owen was dismissed. MacDonald carried Ins but for a very good 14. Allsop secured the best bowling figures, four for 22, while P. Dow obtained three for 13. Carr bowled well, but had no luck. Batting again, Wanderers ma.de *67 for four wickets arul then declared. Curson and Dow made 4.3 for the opening stand, each notching 24 and each also hitting a sixer Carr again batted nicely for. 15 not out. getting away some particularly sweet strokes on the leg side. Cash Stores had only half an hour in which to score 117 runs lor an outright victory, so they really had up chance, but during the time they made 57 for the loss of seven wickets. Five wickets fell for 17 runs, but then Carroll and Hazell made a good stand which put on 28, llazoll hitting three lours in making 14. Newton joined Carroll with about ten minutes to go and three wickets to fall and they were still together at stumps. Carroll batted very confidently and well for his 19 not out, unleashing some very clean driving to either side of the howlers, while Newton showed a return to his good form of some time buck when he promised to prove a tower of strength to the team’s batting.
