The Atlantique, by far the largest and fastest liner on the South Arnerican run, was launched in 1630 by the Chartior et Ateliers do Saint Xazaire-Penhoet; and completed in L 931 for the Campagnie do Navigation Snd-At.jani.iq«e. With a gross tonnage of 45,212 tons, she is fit feet, in. length overall, until a breadth of 62 feet. She is n quadruple screw vessel, and has a r(‘ivi<?e speed at 21 knots. The Atlantique is engaged in C'.e service between .Franco and .'s.utth America, and made her maiden It ip in September, 1031. She cost L-L----200.000. She carries 500 first-class 90 socond-class and 000 third-class passengers, and 1 lie disposition oi tl.e accommodation is on somewhat unusual lines. In contrast to the customary [practice of building the cabins along two parallel alleyways separated by the engincreom nnd in nr ml casings, there is a wide promenade am : osbips, known, as the “Rue Centrale. 1 ’ which runs for 450 feet of the ship’s length. On either side of the promenade 'here are shops for the sale of such varied articles as (lowers;, jewellery, fancy goods, books—and motor-cars! Tho large dining saloon—it is over 100 ft. in length, 60fb. wide, and 30ft. high —is connected by a wide staircase with the other public rooms all of which are decora led in tasteful combinations of m air bln. timber and enamel. Passengers nave at their disposal a swimming pool, gymnasium. shooting gallery, tennis court, cinema and a miniature, golf course.
The propelling machinery of the Atlantique consists of four sots bf Parson’s turbines, each sot comprising one high-pressure, one inter-mediate-pressure, and two low-pres-sure turbines driving the propeller shaft through single-recluction grading. Superheated steam is supplied at 2*281h. per sq. inch by 10 oilffrod c’oubii e-end otl eyliincTiiloal holders.
Special attention has boon paid to the general equipment, which includes a gyroscopic, compass and repeaters, the latest typo of depthsounding apparatus, and n. hvffi'O-eieiqtr'ically-jcojntvolled compensated governor, while the (powerful radio installation gives the wireless , telephono range up to 150, miles.
