A BETTER TONE

./ 'WOOL MARKET.-' >' SECOND" NAPIER SALE. ADVANCE ‘ON -DECEMBER PRICES. SOUTHDOWN SELLS TO 9fd. JAPAN IMPORTANT FACTOR AMONG. /BUYERS. (Press Association.' NAPIER, Jan. 11. . Prices at the second Napier wool sale to-day were distinctly firm on those of the. Wellington safe last week, and accordingly showed an advance on. those realised at the fiist Napier sale on December 6. Compared with December rates, prices for coarse wools of. even quality were about one halfpenny per lb. better, and for better class wools one-fart’ ing better. The most marked improvement was for lambs’ wool, particularly second lambs, which advanced' one penny on the last sale. The total offering comprised 27,533 bales. There were few withdrawals and passing were not frequent. Generally speaking, the wool opened up in heavier condition than at the December sale, but there was not the same quality super hoggets offering.

Buyers were fully representative of all the principal consuming centres, and competition was fairly well spread. Japan was an important factor in the sale, and forced the pace for all medium and 1 fine crossbreds. Halfbreds and Corriedale brought good competition from Dominion mills, Bradford and Continent. All well prepared clips appeared to- be in demand.

A feature of the sale was the improvement in prices of coarser lots, provided they were of even quality, which advanced one half-penny on December rates at Napier.

While practically all classes were firm on recent Wellington rates, lambs’ wool showed a further advance on the prices at Wellington. France took the great bulk of the iambs’ wool, and also bid keenly for good necks, bellies and pieces. Bellies and pieces, in particular, were keenly sought after by France and the Dominion mills at a full farthing advance.

On the Y'hole, the sale was more satisfactory and less erratic than in December, and' the advance shown at Wellington of a farthing to a halfpenny on good to medium types and three-farthings on finer qualities was fully maintained. Sellers generally showed a willingness to meet the market, and a good clearance was made.

Early in the sale a price of 9Jd was obtained for a lot of Southdown wool. Two separate lots of first-grade hogget wool brought Sd, while a third' lot disposed of shortly afterwards brought 71 d. Second-grade hogget wool sold up to 6Jd on the first catalogue. Firstgrade lambs’ wool brought up to 7- 3 t d, good' necks up to 7d, bellies up to 4Jd ,and pieces from 4*d to s*d.

Crutchings shone quite an improvement, selling up to 3A-ct and 31a. ' First-grade crossbred ewe woo! brought 6Jd ; and second-grade crossbred ewe wool sfd; both lots being earl v in the first catalogue. The. range of prices is not available to-night, BROKERS’ REPORTS. MURRAY - , ROBERTS AND COY. Messrs. Murray, Roberts and to. Ltd. report on the second, sale oi the' season held at Napier, 'the total catalogue comprised 23,000 bales, of which the firm offered 3712. There was a full bench of buyers, and competition was keen and. spirited by all .sections of the trade at buyers limits. Values were on a par with those realised at Weliington sale on the 6th inst.; 95 per cent, of the wool offered was sold under the hammer. Gisborne wools included m the catalogue sold as under:
