At a largely attended meeting in Wellington last ■evening, Salvatjion Army trainees received their first commissions. Lieutenant Kathleen Bickford, eldest daughter of Air. and Airs. C. -E. Bickford, of Gisborne, was appointed to the Children’s Home, Wellington; and Lieut. Adam Stein, another well-known Gisborne resident, was appointed to Winton.

Balle, who have • been stationed at Gisborne as representatives of the Salvation Army Special Efforts Department during the past 51 years, will leave to take over their new duties at Alastertoii oil Thursday next. Commandant Balle, during Iris stay in Gisborne, has. also taken the monthly services at Waikolui, Q telco and Rakauroa. Farewell services were held in the Citadel yesterday.

Mr. Gaston Mervalo, elocution judge at the Gisborne Competitions last year, has resigned his position as produced for the Auckland Little Theatre Society, and intends to take up his residence in Gisborne as a teacher of elocution and dramatic art. Mr. Alervalc still retains the produeership of the Auckland Catholic Repertory Society, and will visit Auckland four times a year to stage plays for that organisation. Air. W. J. Jordan, AI.P., who is president of the New Zealand Labor Party, leaves by the, lonic from Wellington oil a hurried visit to England on family business.
