The “griggle tart” still survives m the villages of the West of England, hut elsewhere it is almost unknown. It had its origin in the old harvest custom of farmers opening their apple orchards to the villagers after the crop had been gathered. It was the practice of the. farmers to leave on the trees all the small misformed fruit. On the appointed day for the “gaggling,” as it was called, the villagers arrived with baskets, hooks, sticks, and short ladders to gather the “gaggle” apples. fn good seasons, when the farmer was not particular in picking the undersized fruit, the villagers went home with well-filled baskets, ami 'griggle tarts’ were made. As gleaning was the eh stem in the cornfields, so was “gaggling’’ an annual clearing of the orchards. Farming is ton grim a struggle in these days to admit of the open-handed generosity and kindliness characteristic of ihe countryside in olden times.
