WAR BETWEEN ItI'ORSE-RAUE
STATISTICIANS
UNITED STATES v. ENGLAND
There is a hitter war going on, but quietly, between English and I'mted States horse-race statisticians, L is waged mostly from the tinted States side. It was all caused by a small article apparently which appeared in an English paper deprecating the hysteria, that was caused in America by die great horse Equipoise, when he did " mile in 1.34 2-5. The article stated tha many horses in England ' had done better than that. Three horses in 1927 were supposed to have run that distance in 1.32 4-5. At Lingfield in 1924 the mile is supposed to have been done in 1 -33 by Blue Peto. In 1900, it .is supposed, a horse called Cadmau, carrying 1281 b the shm.o as Equipoise did the distance in 1.33 1-5 over the Lingfield trade. The Americans how claim that in many eases tjie English tracks are measured inaccurately, and also in many cases the tracks are straightaways, without a curve and not level. The Brighton track is quoted as an instance, and the first five ■furlongs are said to be : a. descent very steep indeed, which gives the horse a. terrific momentum and uncanny speed, , there being only ; a very light rise to the winning post in. the last three furlongs.
