NOTES AND NEWS. Silver Scorn, winner ol the .Dunedin Guineas on Saturday, appears to have created a very big impression by the style in which she won this first three-veilr-old classic ef the season. Despite the tael that she was not quite herself during the week siio outclassed the opposition. The Dunedin writer ''Sentinel' says: ‘Silver Scoid was in a lather when in Htc birdcage, but it did uul prevent here starting a strong edds-oii favourite. She waited in behind Arden's Beauty until teaching the straight, and then strode home an easy winner with her ears pricked. Irish Lady and Rocket both dropped back as if they had suffered interference. Silver Scorn is a high-class Jill}'.”

Nightmarch concluded his Sydney racing on Saturday by linishing °ut of a place in the Randwiek Plate. The Night Raid horse has been a disappointment on the present trip. He has won a little place money ,but his form lias been far below his best of other days and though he may earn enough at Flouihiglon, in weigh t-t’or-age events, to pay the expenses of a visit to Melbourne, it SC '- lUS doubtful if an extension of hi s trip will enhance his reputation. His first foals, making their appearance this season, are spoken of highly, and he may make a name as a sire.

Three dividends will not be paid by the totalizator at the spring meeting of the AVelliugtou Racing Club. The president of the club, Air. E- !<• Riddil’ord, attended the Otaki meeting and closely followed the operation of the new system there. Lt was as a result of Air. Rkldiford s observations that ,1 he decision to adhere to the two-dividend system was made.

Arise, Bon WRapide, and Boudoir ha-vo been scratched tor all engagement's at the Avondale meeting. Though not required to do anything outstanding in the way of fas'.' galloping, Hawthorn is gqltiug through a solid preparation at Elleislie aim will be in good order for the Avondale meeting. This hack put up a usetul performance when he ran third to Royal Gallant and Puss Moth in a seven l'urlong event at the Great Northern meeting, and a repetition of that form should find him in Hie money at Avondale. So lar Hawthorn has not been successful beyond seven furlongs, but in Ids present condition he should be capable of running out a mile journey satisfactorily. To Hoia’s party are confident that their representative .will tako some beating when tlie business cud of the Avondale Cup is in sight. I hey niav be x*ight, too, for the halt-biothei to To Kara has rolled into his work in great style lately. He has to give Baroscope a bit of weight, but while they' respect the latter they have ever v .confidence, in their, representative. Te lloia is inclined to loaf over Inc clusinw stages of a distance of giouud when “training. With a strong horseman it' will ho possible to get Die last ounce out of Te Uoia, who is more robust in every way sjijcc seen eut nt Ellcrslic, wjiero lie woji Lite Jellicee Handicap in August.—S'ar. * * The two-vear-old Guarantee, winner of the McLean Stakes at Dunedin, is bred for early speed, being by Paper Money from Entre Nous, by lionifonn from Secret Link, by Benaoniau from Chainstiteh, by Chain* sjiob from Sylph, by Javelin. flic family traces lo a numberless tap-root,-but it has been represented by many good winners. Entre Nous is a half-sister lo Silver Link, who was a brilliant performer, and whose winning progeny include Silverniine and Chief Link. The success of Guarantee was well anticipated after Ids good second in the Novice Stakes at Oamarn the previous Saturday. * * -r* Balloon, whose end at Olaki. last Saturday was tragic: ill the extreme, was perhaps otic of the best ol Gasbag's disappointing slock to race. He had a, full career, starting over one hundred times in his lour seasons, and lie won ten races in all. It is unnecessary t'o expatiate at large on the unfortunate tragedy that closed hm career, Tho deplorable method of his dispatch at Olaki will never be forgotten by those who had the niisiortjuno to witness it. Instead of a quick death after he bad broken a shoulder, he had to undergo fully live minutes or longer ol wholly unnecessary torture. Not only was there unpardonable delay in shooting Jinn, but tliero was a shocking misdirect ion of aim in uho two shots fired into him, and, as there was apparently .no other ammunition, the horse luul. to sullet tho agony of a lingering death- H " as a pitiiul scene for any racing public to witness, particularly lor that section of it that loves a Ihorougli-bred. it is certainly tho ’Olaki executive’s duty to see that so far as is within its power, there shall bq no lecuirenco of such, it* slaughter on ns course again,—Evening Post. “Whatever the Otaki haiidicnpper might have thought l about the ability of Royal Routine, thq horse's connections and the general public thought a lot differently, and connections- -and. public were correct.; Ninth {’ho weight Mr Coyle gave liini Jio found the winning if the Wuioi'ougomai Handicap simply child’s play, and alter the race one was loft wondering by just how much more than those three lengths he might have, won had his rider required it from him. Royal Routine was a good winner last season, for in eleven starts he was successful oil five occasions, was second three times, and was third once'. His two unplaced performances were at tho Wellington summer meeting in January, and following on those performances, which evideiitly disappointed his joint* owners and trainers, •he.was sent out for a spelt. Hie was returned to. work during the-winter, and he was reproduced last Saturday, looking* extremely well. It is a coincidence that he has opened his racing for i'h e ‘last two seasons with wins in the Otaki Waiorongonmj Handicap.

Olio of the most promising hacks to be stepped out for at Jong tunc is Air \V. AlcA. Duncan’s Plateau who, m liis only two start's to date, was very narrowly beaten by Sanguine King in (lie Ta-uunimtka Hack Handicap on Lite first day at Otaki. and then on tho second dav was hacked down to a ridiculously short odds in tbe Rahui Hack Handicap, and non as and when ho liked, with just how much in hand it is possible only to conjecture, for lie was under a- bold and had ]iis ears pricked almost all the way down the straight.

The committee ot the Auckland Racing Club considered the oueslion of introducing the three dividend system at the spring meeting at Ellerslic next month. It was decided not to make any alteration, hut to retain the two dividend system. That means that two dividends will h e paid where there are six starters in a race, exclusive of bracket’s. The regulations recently apnroved bv the executive of the New Zealand Racing Conference cav,» clulis the power to pay two dividends in Holds of live exclusive ot brackets, but this was not adopted.
