Mrs. ■ Woodroff, wife of an accountant of the British-Aineriean Tobacco Company, stationed at Harbin, was taking her children to school in a motor car when she encountered bandits. The chauffeur turned sharply to avoid them, when’ he was shot and wounded. Mrs Woodruff jumped from the ear with her children, but she .was shot dead. The children, escaped to an adjacent Russian home. Later details reveal that three armed bandits in military uniforms held up the ear, which wus driven by a young Russian. The bandits attempted to kidnap the children and Mrs. Woodroff fought tigerisldy, aided by the chauffeur and another Russian. The mother wag shot dead and the two Russians wounded. The police were attracted by the shooting and the bandits took lo their heels, but one was shot dead; another wounded and captured, and a third escaped, 'l)lie outrage occurred in broad daylight and distressed the foreign community.
Another message spells The chief victim's name “Woodruff.”
