WORKLESS BOYS
POSITION MA Y BE WORSE IN JANUARY. END OF SCHOOL YEAR. Addressing the meeting of various organisations in Wellington concerned in boy employment, Mr. -S. G. Smith. ALP.., said the report which ho aud Mr. A. S. Ansell. M-P- were preparing oil the Dominion position of boy unemployment was. not yet finished, hut he could say that the problem was exceedingly acute in the four centres, though -not so acute in Wanganui. Invercargill, Palmerston North, mid. Hamilton. Wanganui had been able to put 117 boys on. farms. Towns such as New Plymouth and Napier could,handle their problem. He believed that, in spite of. all the efforts being made, the problem would be more difficult at the end °f the year, because hundreds of boys had been allowed to remain at school one or two years longer than usual because of the lack of employment for them and the great bulk of such boys must come out of .school at the end' of this year, It was hoped that by jlien certain proposals would ’be formulated which would case the position, but in January there would be grchb. difficulty in -finding boys work. The -position was being fully -realised! said Mr. Smith, and throughout the {Dominion there were representative: committees doling their best to ease 1 the presurc.
