The cost of Urn Hawke's Bay earthquake to the State (according to the Budget) was approximately 01770.000, made up as'follows:— Immediate assistance and restoration of public services, £55.000; rehabilitation grants and loan.s business and other purposes, £S-1(V 600; loans to local bodies for rosier, atiun of services, £259,000; public buildings. £200.600; roads and bridges, £84,000; railway-lines. £35,000; surveys, maps. etc.. £<2,000; assistance from Unemployment Lund mostly for mads, bridges, slop-bunk', clearing away debris, etc.. £IOO-000; other miscellaneous costs, £131,000; total— £1,770.000. The-. assistance afforded to earthquake sufferers, together with the amount transferred to the Consolidated Fund last year, has reduced the Reserve Fund to a realisable value of approximately £200,000-
