MRS. NAT. PILCHER

Wilpam, Arthur, Walter, Frederick, Ernest, and Nathaniel Pilcher. There are 42 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren. The interment took place at Mak<araka cemetery yesterday afternoon.

MRS. W. DAVIDSON. The death occurred on Friday night °f .Mrs. Elloq Davidson, wife "of Air. William Davidson, of Collins street. Mrs'. Davidson was born at Table Hill, Otago, 611 years ago, and was a daughter of..the late Mr. and Airs. George McKay, of Otago. She was married in Christchurch, and came to live in Gisborne 30 years ago. During her residence hero she had been a keen worker in the affairs of the Presbyterian Church. The late Arcs, Davidson is survived by her husband, one son, A[r. Jack Davidson, .and two daughters, Mesdames F.. McConnell and A. Kinnamont, to 'whom the deepest, sympathy of a" wield, ericle of friends will he extended.' There are two sisters, Mrs. H. Lang (Wellington), and Airs; Penfold (Hamilton), and a brother, Mr. N. McKay (Wellington). MRS. WILLIAM CHOKE.

The death occurred on November 13 of a pioneer of the Alarlborough district, in the.person of Airs. Sarah Jane Cooke, relict of the late Air. William, Cooke,"and mother of Air. L. Cooke of iGishorne. The deceased lady had resided continuously in tho Marlborough district for 77 years, and it was her claim that she and her sister, the late Mrs. W. Al. Esso n, were the two first white girls to reside in Pieton. Airs. Cooke was born ,in Canada in 184.5, and with her widowed rnolhor and brother and sister, landed at Nelson in 1854, Mrs. Cooke being 10 years of age when they moved to Pieton. Her brother, the Iat D Mr. James Fuller, opened a store in Pieton, and in 1860 the deceased married Air. William Cooke, a prosperous Blenheim storekeeper. The family are Alessrs B. J. Cooke (Bjenheijm), Norman Cooke (Auckland), Harold Cooke (Hokitika). L. -Cooke (Gisborne), the Rev. Percy Cooke (Damedin), and Mrs-. Alex Miller (Wellington). MR. JOHN ALEXANDER LUCAS With very deep regret, a wide circle of friends will learn of .tho death of Mr. John Alexander Lucas, which occurred yesterday morning. Born at Onehunga in 1857, the late Mr- Lucas was educated at Auckland and was brought up to the butchering business. He settled in Gisborne in 1876 and his industriousness and. quiet, unassuming manner soon earned for him many acquaintances. For a time after his arrival here Air. Lucas was engaged in the carrying business. . He then joined the butchering staff of - the late Mr. Mclntosh for a time. Subsequently he was employed at cordial making by the late Mr W. F. Crawford In 1891 Air. Lucas, with Mr. Sawyer, took over Mr. D. J. Barry’s cordial business, which, later, was acquired by Air. H.- Alartin. H 0 was also the Licensee of various .hotels in this district, including the Record Reign, MuriWai, Bridge and Coronation. For over 30 years, Mr. Lucas was associated with" the conducting of the totalizator in this district, first in conjunction. with Air. H. Alartin. and for the past- 16 years with Air. A. J. Nicol. Mr. Lucas was always a keen supporter of the turf and raced .a number of horses, including that good performer Continuance, who won tho Grand National Hurdles. Afterwards Mr. Lucas took Continuance to Alelhourne where he won a steeplechase and was sold. As on other occasions, Air. Lucas it last winter in Australia, returning about the middle of October He attended the first day’s local races that month, but, on the second day, decided to go into hospital in order to build up, his intention bemg to visit an outside specialist. He gradually failed, however, and passed away about 9.30 yesterday morning. Mr. Lucas was for a number of years a valued member of the Te Arai Road Board. He was Past Arch of the Turanganui Lodge of Druids and a member of the New Zealand Natives Association. In 1885 he married a daughter of the late Air. G. H. Evans of Gisborne, and tho family consisted of two daughters and one eon. Mrs. Lucas died .some years ago. and there survive one of fche daughters. Mrs. Thcring, of Sydney, and the eon, Al r . Bert Lucas, of Hamilton, to whom widespread sympathy will be extended.
