OBITUARY

MR. GEORGE OATES, OF TOKOMARU BAY.

The many friends of Air. George Oates, a member of -the _ firm ©i Messrs Oates Bros., of Tokomaru Bay w ill be deeply shocked to learn of li'is death at his home, Ongaruru yesterday afternoon. For some time, the late Mr. Oates had been off colour and only at the week-end had he returned from a fortnight’s holiday at Alartinborough. Yesterday morning he went to business as usual, but at lunch time he rang op his brother to say that he did not think he would come down in th<? afternoon, as he was not feeling very well. During the afternoon, he lay on a stretcher on the verandah and at about four o’clock, he, suddenly collapsed. A nurse from the maternity home was immediately summoned to attend him and Ins medical adviser. Dr. Alackay, of lo Puia, who happened to he in Gisborne. was communicated with. Ponding Isis immediate return, the nurse carrying out the doctor’s _ instructions, administered restoratives, but lie failed to rally. The late Air. Oates, who was 4-1 .years of age, was born in Opotiki and "was tho second son of the late Air. and Airs. AYm. Oates senr. He had, for many years, been prominent not only in business circles on the Coast, but also in many other activities, particularly sport, in respect of which he was, perhaps, best known for liis efforts to assist cricket, rifle shooting, rugby and golf. He had lieeu chosen once again to represent AAhiiapu in the cricket field, but lie had had to notify the selectors that ho did not feel well enough to make the trip to Gisborne, next week. Dr. Alackay had called on him on AVednesdpy and had prescribed further treatment for him. Deceased served two years at the Great AA r ar and was wounded at Pnsschendaele. To mourn their great loss are left the widow and, three young children, also Ilia two sisters, Airs. Mcllattie (Auckland) and Aliss Connio Oates (Tokomaru Bay), aud four brothers, Messrs. A Yip,, Joseph, Hedley and Norman Gates, tu all of whom’will be extended the deepest sympathy of a very wide oirolo of Coast and Gisborne friends.
