jp SPIRITED AWAY croupier got to AUCKLAND AN AMUSING DENOUEMENT (Special to the Times.) AUCKLAND, Nov. 19. An-> interesting ' account of the circumstances connected with the coizuro of tho racehorse Croupier at Itiecarton last Saturday is published, by the Herald. Tho seizure was / carried out by Mr 11. AV. Collins, of j Mafigere. After he had secured pos-we-»Jsion of tho horse, as previously related, tho benefit of carefully laid ('plans now carno to his aid. Ho had “planted” a rug outside and, covernig Croupier with it, ho hastened to tho road whore a motor float was : waiting for him. An immediate start t was' made for Lyttelton and Croupiier. was loaded into the ferry steam- ■■ er.’Tho next development occurred :in .'Wellington on Sunday. After attending to Croupier and seeing him Iplaeed -under lock and key in .a 'stable, Mr Collins went to bed. Hie was awakened by three men, one of (them being Mr Corry’s son, who is u solicitor. They told Air Collins (Shat lie and Croupier would have to ,utay in Wellington. Air Collins took Air' Corry junior to tho stable, and showed him the horse. That night ,he. played bridge with Air Corry, ' who drove him back to his hotel aftor a very pleasant evening. Alost v,f Aronday morning and afternoon Mr; Collins spent with Mr Corry. 'Croupier was always- the subject .of Ntischssion. A hlenoucinCnt came Nit j live o’clock /when Air Collins 'shopped a bombshell by announcing / that Croupier had left for Auckland Hi A departure had been, supervised Gy tho stable proprietor. In the eerily hours 'of tho morning, Croupier Hi ad’ bilcn quietly taken from the ’..stable and conveyed bv motor float to Palmerston North. There he joined >tho Alain Trunk express in tho afternoon, arriving at Auckland on Tuesday morning. Mr Collins said ho felt much admiration for the boy Mho had so stoutly shown his loyalsty tp his otuplyer by trying to prevent’tho horse being taken. Ho had ascertained that his name was Burgess. and in a letter written, from Wellington ho had sent him .£2. Alt' (Collins also said that he Holt sorry about the circumstances in which lie . had accepted the hospitality of Mr Worry’s son while tho horse was Ixiirig spirited away. However, Air Corry had lunched _ with him, so thatf almost (evened it. ' i‘. LEYTN RACES ■ i ' - v ; RIDING ENGAGEMENTS Hr Wiggins has boon engaged to ride Briar Root, Acis, Eininont, Kilstar, and?" 4 •. —— y NOTiiS AND NEWS. All 'went to the post for tho Hamilton Handicap op. Monday, with the oxchption of Trite, Bipod. AVerata (£3§B) was favorite, with Chief Joy .'(£1143) and Tancriri (£251) »cxt ■; most sought after, while Supremacy . carried only £lßll. Jiafoscopo- and Chiof Joy were the first to show out, but., when tho field settled down- Supremacy was in c-harg 0 from Werata, ,Grand Tea, Cruaohuu, Tuneriri, and Baroscope. Supremacy, AVera- . ta ..and Chief Joy. were bunched crbsßifig the Lop, Hhe trio -being lol, towed . by IliH-oseope, Taiieri.ri and Cruachan. Supremacy was first to turn for liome, with Chief Joy, Baroscope, We ruts, and Taueriri most hauay of tile others. In it great finish Chief Jov got up in time- to beat Supremacy by a neck, while Baroscope was three-quarters of a length u„ay, followed by Voliiriond, Tancriri, Cruachan and Flying Prince. Jaloux showed easily his best form to date when lie finished fourth in the Now Zealand Cup. and third in tho Metropolitan Handicap. On each occusiori ho was a good way back e-urly, and finished with a strong run; in fact many think that had lie made up his ground more gradually in tho Aletropolitan, ho would liavo won. Jaloux is full of staying blood, and lie should go on to better things before the end of the season. His siro. Sutala, was a : first, class horse whoso career was cut short by an accident. Sutala is by Elysian- (son of Soult), a top line throe-year-old, from Lady Hester by St. Leger, from Musket Afaid by Musket; On the dam’s side there- is also an abundance of good blood. Egotism was a, good .mare in her day, and she is bv Demosthenes from Conceit, bv Boniform from Lady Wayward 11. -. • Tho Taranaki filly Sparkling Alora by Hunting Song from Diamond Ring, was produced in tho Trial Stakes at To Rapa-on Saturday, and ran a great race, only to bo boaton by the more experienced Lady Musk by a length. She began quickly and was in front when the field turned for homo, but weakened 1 over the last hundred yards ni tho long, tiring straight. This filly showed a. lot of quality and is a very stylish mover arid should not be long in reaching thp, winning list. Sho i 3 trained by R. Barlow at Now Plymouth and comes from a good family. Her dam. Diamond 1 Ring, is by tho A.J.C. Derby winnor, Killboy (by Kilbroney), from Hope Diamond, by Royal Artillery from Bluefire (two of the late Mr. G. C. Stead’s horse 9), Hope Diamond is tho dam of Sauci, Parisian Diamond, Alatatanc and. Zircon. Parisian Diamond did good service for Mr G. D. Boatson, while Matatane, who raced in Mr. H. M. Campbell’s colours, won tho Grout Northern Oaks. Zircon was also a good performer on the fiat and also over hurdles and steeples. Eaglet, who showed that sho was returning to form when sho ran third in a seven furlong race at the Avondale spring meeting, looked a much improved mare when she went out to contest the Waikato Cup at To Rapa. Although carrying top-weight (8.13), sho was never furtlior back than fourth and, improving her position crossing the top, sho ran out tho journey in good stylo, to score by a neck from t lie little fancied Brampton. Eaglet was the best of her sex as a threel year-old in New Zealand and is retaining her form remarkably well. Sho has. been awarded 9.6 in the Alison Cup at Takapuna, and it looks as though sho has got more than she deserves, for this is the first race she has won since slio carried 8.4 in tho Poley Memorial Handicap, one mile and a quarter, at Avondale, in the autumn. Gay .Marigold, a two-year-old filly by Grand Knight from Queen Alarch, was started for the first time at Te Rapu on Monday and scored an impressive win in th e Ruakuva Stakes. She was well back half-way down the straight, but finished on resolutely, .to got the verdict by a length. Gay Marigold is a jot black, with white stocking!}. and though somewhat on tho 6inull side, lacks nothing on the score of galloping. She is trained by J. T, Jamieson for Messrs O. Nicholson and E. R. Davis, T3ie lattor of whom raced Queen Alarch, who was a really Hood performer. Though Grand Knight is given as a brown horse in the stud book, he certainly looks; black, whilo Queen Alarch was also black. Among the hacks racing at To Rapa tiono impressed more than Persliani, a three-year-old colt by Lackham from Persia, who won tho Clarkin Hack '-Handicap. Always well placed, Persham was running third entering the straight, and, finishing . very determinedly, scored in good style. Per-

sham created a surprise by winning on this course as a two-year—old last season, and as'this was only Iris second outing this season' his form was most encouraging. Lackham, his sire has two very speedy representatives in Golden Wings and Lack racing this season, and Pereliam looks as though lie will attain good class before ho is finished. Miss Linley, winner of the' Ta muhero Stakes at Te Rapa, is a two-year-old by Gainscourt from Quinkama, and is one of A. Cook’s team at Te Awamutu, Aliss Linley was in front after, a furlong had boon covered, and hung on well to beat Alarch Alone. Sho i 8 not a very big filly, but there is no doubt about her galloping ability. Advice from Te Awamutu states that the two-year-old, Tankard, by Tea Tray—Zany, who got into a fence recently, has had to be destroyed. This is very unfortunate for his owner, Mr. C. B. O’Donnell, who purchased him a few months ago. Tankard had only bad three starts, and won twice—Nursery Handicap at Avondale and' the Alusket Stakes at Ellerslie. Ho was unplaced in the Wollesley Stakes at Trenfcham. Lady Musk, who showed promising form at Avoudalo, looked an improved filly when sho went out to contest the Trial Stakes at Te Rapa, and, after being well placed early, finished on strongly, to score by nearly a length. Lady Musk, who is trained at Te Aroba by A. E. Cox, has a lot of speed, and promises to develop into u good winner before the season, is through. Sbo is by Mukkoloori from Miss A mans, and therefore inherits stout, staying blood. Musketoon was a good performer in his day. being by Steadfast, a siro of 111111101003 winners in Engluud. Lady Musk is the second of Muskefcpon V stock to„ win, the other being To Wnipu, who accounted for the Avondale Stakes.
