YOUTH BELIEVED DROWNED

Arthur Wellsted, aged 16, is missing and is believed to ho drowned as the result of a fourtoen-foot yacht capsizing- in the Rang', to to Channel at midday to-day. A companion, Cyril Webster, aged 18, was picked up by a launch after leing in the water for about an hour. A sudden squall struck the boat, which capsized. The youths got into a dinghy and commenced to row to Rangitoto, ■ but the dinghy swamped. u obster struck out ior the island and. when last seen by him. AVellsted was holding an oar. Launches searched the locality without finding Wellsted, who is a son of Mr A. W. Wellsted. commercial agent for the Railways Department.

DEATH OF YOUNG GIRL

COLLAPSE UNDER ANAESTHETIC

HASTINGS, Oct. 21

A twelve-year-old girl named Gladys Elizabeth Harper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. 11. J. Harper, of Nelson Street, Hastings, (lied under an anaesthetic while being operated upon at tho Hastings Memorial Hospital on Friday. At tho inquest it was stated by Dill. M. Wilson that the child had been admitted to hospital on account of failing eyesight and headache. She had been admitted on August 31. Her condition had been investigated by Dr. Moller ancl Dr. Scoular, and it bad been diagnosed as brain trouble. Two operations were performed, and the child’s condition began to improve. She had a change for the worse, however, and another operation was ordered lo take place on Friday. During the progress of the operation she collapsed and died.
