DIFFICULT TASK

Owing to the destruction of records in the Labor Bureau at Auckland in consequence of the recent ■ disturbance caused by some of the unemnloved, also to'the loss of records at Napier as a result of the earthquake there, it has not been possible to furnish, during tho past couple of weeks, returns showing the unemplovment position throughout the Dominion. This statement was made by the Minister for Labor on Saturday when explaining, why there had been a fortnight's interval since the uast announced unemployment registrations The Minister stated that the returns for the week ended' February 23 had now, been compiled.' They showed that the total applications then pending on the books of tho dc* partment were 27,662. Following are tho returns of the unemployed in the main cep-res for the week under ■■'review:—

Auckland with dependants 4166, without dependants 3000, total 7166. AYellington 2001. 1750, total 3/51. Christchurch 2124, 1331, total 3155. Dunedin 992, 931, total 1923. Invercargill 816, 250,' total 566.

Of ihe grand total of 27,668, new or renewed applications during the week were 8466. Of those, 3454 wore from persons who had not pr'ovinusly registered during the past twelve months. Of th 0 27,668, 19,978 were qualified and again placed in employment under the Unemployment Board’s schemes Nos. 2 and 5- Excluding tho men employed under Ihcsc schemes, tlie following summarises tho posifiqji:—Auckland 5679, Wel-lin-don 1662, Christchurch 1142, Dunedin 402,'. Invercargill 180, other towns in New Zealand 7510, total 16,684. Of these the majority /are. not yet qualified under the conditions relating to employment under 'he board’s schemes.
