FLEMINGTON RACES

PHAR LAr WINS ESSENDON STAKES NEWMARKET TO PAR.KAVOOD GJ.P.A. by Ele«». Tel. CopyrighU (Received March, 1, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE Feb. 28. The weather was fine and bright, fot the Flemington races. The going was good and there was a satisfactory attendance. Dookie led all. the way in the Hurdles and won easily. A hot favorite, Carwoola, fell at the first hurdle: There was an exciting finish in the Sires Produce Stakes in which Mulora finished fast and won in the last stride. This was his first success and ho gives promise of being a stayer. He is trained bv Goodfellow.

Phar Lap led in the last nine furlongs of the Essendon Stakes and was not oxtended. Glare was a bad last early in the race, but finished strongly. Phar Lap has now won £50,762 in stakes. His jockey Pike had won the Essendon Stakes previously on The Hawk and Pendant. Parkwood had a- brilliant victory in tho Newmarket Handicap, in which he led all the way, just defeating the fast-finishing Waterline. Mollison was always prominent and was a good third. Parkwood is the leading juvenile of his season, but bis form lately has been unreliable. His trainer is the veteran Frank Musgrave, who won the Newmarket with Amata in 1916. It is a coincidence that there were also thirty-two starters in that

season. Veilmond, who was third early, took charge in the straight in the St. Leger and won nicely. Ho was ridden by the New Zealander, ■ McCarten. His trainer is George Price, who also prepared the third horse Carry On. The Australian Cup Candidate St. Mary had an impressive win in the Brunswick Stakes, in which Induna and Naden showed improved form St. Mary is owned and trained at Ado Inkle by .T. M. Cummings.
