The seaworthiness of. the former Sydney Trust dredge Nereus which was 33. years old, bought for £535, reconditioned for £IOO and resold by a private company to, the Elvorston© Harbour . Board for £4,300, was inqujred into' by a .Marine .Court. ! The Nereus was eh route for Tas. mania, but sank while in tow on February -11 J, off Low 1 Head, Captain Fitzpatrick and' a< member' of the crew being drowned. The evidence disclosed that engine defects developed while the dredge was on the way ,to Tasmania. ■: She steered badly and was leakipg. Some members of the crew declined to continue the voyage. Captain , Muir signed off at Eclon and Captain Fitzpatrick took commend for the rest of * the trip. A navigation officer inspected the dredge ■at .Tervis Bay and at Eden passed her ns seaworthy. The case'was adjourned.
