HARBOR BOARDS AND MAORI WORKERS. (Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Feb. 2G. The question of the non-employ-ment of Maoris as members ol the permanent staff was raised at a meeting of tlie Harbor Board by 7 Air. H. L. Bennett,, who said he understood the reason was one of insurance. Personally lm could see no reason for such a differentiation against Maoris, Tlie chairman, Air. J. 13. MaoEwan, said tlit 1 Government Life Assurance Department and insurance companies would not .accept risks on members of the Native race, and the board's regulations required mcniLers'of the permanent staff to be insured. He agreed that it was not fair to differeniiiiate against Maoris, and if possible the board should find a remedy for the position. After further discussion the chairman stated that a report on the matter would he submitted to the next meeting.
