Following the lead of the Government, drapers and boot retailers of Christchurch have unanimously decided to reduce the salaries! of &R menibers of their staffs who are not under tho jurisdiction of the Arbitration Court by 10 per cent, as from March 1, and to bring all employees covered by award rates down to the award rate in cases where Hiey are receiving in, excess of that amount. By this means it is proposed to make a further immediate reduction in tho cost of living,' and to avoid the necessity of further dismissals and the rationing of work.

Tho Wellington drapers and boot retailors held a meeting of their organisation a day or two ago. and decided to make a reduction commencing oil March 1 in the wages and salaries of all members of tlieir staff's who are not under the jurisdiction of tho Arbitration Court and in the case of those under an award and who receive above the award rates. The reduction will be lOy per-cent, or down to award rates. Tn the building trade cuts have, been made in some departments by firms who have been paying above the award rates. Laborers are nowbeing paid award rates only, and carpenters who wore rcceivingv a. penny or twopence an hour over the award rate are now receiving only one halfpenny all hour over the award.
