THE CHATEAU, Jan. 3. Mr. S. lnglis, of Christcliurc

was one of a. party of 15 visitors who successfully accomplished the ascent of Mount Ruapehu yesterday afternoon. Just after reaching the hot. lake at the summit he slipped or the ice and dislocated his shouldec He was assisted through the snow to a hut on the mountain, where he collapsed. Mr. Gordon Blythe, who was in charge of the party, improvised a stretcher with skis and coats, and a slow descent of the mountain was begun.

Miss Rendell, of Auckland, volunteered to carry a message .to the Chateau, and on her arrival a rescue party was organised by the manager of the Chateau. Scoria. Flat was reached in record time, and the injured man was carried to the Chateau, which was reached five hours after the accident occurred. He is progressing satisfactorily.

The Government has commenced a road to Scoria Flat, and had this road been completed help would have been obtained much sooner.
