It was ■ reported to tlie police that, a car upside down was lying in a • lagoon about a mile on the Port Chalmers side of St. Leonards. On the arrival of the police at the spot, the cor was righted, and it was found that the body of a man, since identified as that of John Charles Styche, was inside. Rigor mortis had set in, and the man had evidently been dead for a number of hours.

Styche was a single man aged 22 and boarded in South Dunedin, his parents residing at Port Chalmers. An inquest will he opened tomorrow morning.

POUND DEAD IN BATH

fPress Association.} CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 4. Helena Rose Watson, married-, aged 52, of Onslow, Sf. Albans, was found dead in the hath at her home at 2 o’clock, this morning. An inquest was opened to-day before Mr. E. D. Moslev. coroner. Frank Watson, labourer, husband of the dead( woman, said that about 10 p.m. on Saturday he went to bed, when his wife brought him a cup of tea saying she was going to have a bath. Witness drank the tea and went to sleep. He woke up at 2 a.m. and on finding his wife was not in bed went to the bathroom, where he found her dead in the bath. Witness thought his wife had had a hath and had .died before she had been able to get dressed. The hath was empty but the towel was lying alongside. It had apparently been used. The inquest, was adjourned sine die pending the result of a post mortem examination.

FATAL WRESTLING BOUT

PALMERSTON N., .Tan. 3. _ The death occurred in hospital this morning of a Maori. George McDonald 2S. following injuries received in a friendly wrestling- bout. Deceased, is reported to have fallen heavily on his back, and succumbed to- spinal injuries.'

When mowing, grass a team started to move off and Smyrl rushod to check them, hut was ’knocked down in the path of the mower blade and dragged .about -SO .yards. .A child on the. machine had the presence of mind to pull the knife out of. gear, .hut the; steel fingers .of the guard struck Smyrl on the head and;-back fracturing the skull. Acute infective ■ meningitis set in, with fatal' consequences.
