TELEGRAM TO AIR. RANSOM
Following ithe announcement in yesterday’s Times that instructions had been issued to the Public Works Department to definitely close down work : -on the Gisborne-Waikdkopn railway section as from* January /, the date on which, -the failway delegation is to meet ; the-acting-Premier and other members of Cabinet -'in AYellington, the Alayor (Mr. D. AAA Coleman) despatched io~. the Hon. E. A. Ransom the following telegram:
“It is reported in the ptess that instructions have been issued to the Public Works Department >to definitely close» down work on the Walkokopu-Gisborne railway on January 7, and to collect all equipment. We can - hardly' believe this report to be time, after your assurance that the work was only closed down for he holidays',' and that you would meet a. delegation from Gisborne on that very date todiscuss ... the question. .Gisborne will be indignantly surprised if latest report' s true. A public protest meeting is being held on Alonday- * AYe trust you will cancel -any instructions given to stop work. Our delegation wishes to meet at least the Ministers of Public Works and Railways, with yourself, on January 7.”
