ALL MUST SACRIFICE

BRITAIN’S NEED IN FACE OP

SERIOUS ORDEAL.

FACTS MUSTS BE FACED.

ECONOMY OF VITAL IMPORTANCE.

PRIMATE’S SERMON

(British Official Wireless) RUGBY, Dec. 29. The need for sacrifice in the face of one of the most serious ordeals wherewith Britain ever has been faced was emphasised in a sermon, last night by the Archbishop of Canterbury, in Canterbury Cathedral. Sacrifice must be made by all classes and sections, though it he the Sacrifice of long-conceived opinions. There must bo a readiness to view tho situation in the light of existing facts. There must be sacrifices of industry, agriculture, and trade unions, and sacrifices' rendered necessary in order to secure for industry and for labor the mobility which was needed to meet the crisis of the time. There might even have to be sacrifice of advantages which certain sections of the community, quite rightly at the time, secured for themselves, but which were no longer consistent with right and fairness to the whole body of the people. There might have to be, though it was hard to say it. some temporary sacrifice of the standard of liife, deservedly won on the basis of the past-, when production and sale were assured. There must he sacrifice in order to ease the recovery of that basis in the future. Not least, there must he sacrifice, especially by the wealthier, in expenditure on amusement and luxuries.
