THRILLS AT THE PARK

FINE SPORT YESTERDAY

Favored by ideal weather condh tions yesterday’s annual meeting of the Gisborne Sports Motor Cycle Club, hold at the-Park Racecourse, proved a splendid success, the at" tendance being very large -and the racing of . the keenest and undoubtedly ;more crammed -with than any previous meeting. . Excellent en« tries, had been received, and the rid ers. included . most'.' of, the' leading wheelmen of the North Island, including the world’s record holder Percy/ Coleman.;,. . - „ v , • Tlie .track was very fast,- being hard and ‘ with . little grass, so" that the times’ put "up were first-class. Several' mishaps- occurred; during the day, one, at least, unfortunately, being of -a serious nature. All the aocicfents can bei attributed to the recent advance made in the machines, the higher speeds now obtainableadding to the risks of the past. Another cause of the mishaps was the small amount of grass on the tracks, the dried-up ’ surface affording the wheels little, grip when cornering at fast speeds, all the . falls, occuriing when the riders were making the turns P. Fletcher, ,of Auckland, when‘leading in,, the. big event of the day crashed and appeared to bo hit by the footrest of his machine.
