He was also presented with a bound volume of the letters received wit a the donations. ’After a colorful ceremony, the aged sportsman endeavoured to deliver an address ol appreciation but was overcome by emotion and was forced .to sit down and allow his speech to be finished by a friend. ’ Afterwards, though pale, with lips compressed, Sir Thomas Upton smiled wanly and allowed the Mayor.- Mr Walker, to escort him. to an automobile. which, he entered without- assistance.
'The crowd of onlookers did not realise his condition.
However, he appeared better after the ceremony bad finished.
A New .York P.A. cable statfri: “Sir Thomas Lipton was present* d with a Cup of Goodwill for his sportsmanship yesterday by the Ajayor, Mr, .fames Walker, who, with the humorist. Will Rogers, arranged a public subscription for the gift. Sir T. Lipton was overcome by the heat of the presentation chamber in the City Hall, but quickly recovered. Will Rogers, who was unable to be present, sent a telegram. ‘You think this [is;a fine cup. 'Phis is nothing to the one we are going to give you when von lose next time - .”
