The question of Sunday cinein as has been thrown' into the melting pot by the sensational verdict oi the King’s Bench; in an action agginst the London County Council. For twenty years the Council has permited cinemas to open on Sunday if the profits Hvei’e given to charities, hut tho Judges have decided that the Council has been usurping their jurisdiction ,sis such performances are expressly ’ forbidden under the Sunday Observance Act of 1780. As Mri-i' Justice Swift said, the council’s action-was all “bunkum.”
The action was due to theatrical managers who object to discrimination in favpr of toinemas. The judgment threatens ..charities with the loss of £150,000 annually, contributed as a. result of cinemas opening on Sunday. ' The Lord’s Day Observance Society is delighted with the judgment, but threatre proprietors hope the outcome will he the introduction into Parliament of .a- Bill_ permitting general Sunday entertainment^.
