The members of the New Zealand eclips expedition landed from H.ALS. Laburnum at Xiaufoou Isand at. S a.ns. on Monday. They were welcomed by Dr. S. A. Afitchell on behalf of the American party, who have been on the island lor several weeks preparing for observations. The Americans aro under the control of Commander ■ Keppler. who extended every facility to New Zealand’s representatives. The New Zeaanders started work almost immediately after landing on Tuesday. Dr. Adams chose a site for the erection of New Zealand instruments and it is hoped a start will bo made on Wednesday with the concrete work for the foundations.
The Tonga n. Government’s new wireless station at Niaufoou was opened on Monday. The opening ceremony was carried out in truo native style. The dress of the natives was most picturesque, embracing all the colors of the rainbow. The singing was most harmonious and rhymthic and tiro dancing was a beautiful sight. 'All the New Zealand party- are well. This is the first press message sent by the Tongan Government radio at Niuafoou Island.
