SOUTHLAND TOUHNAMENT OPrtttajj 1 i A 11.3 INVERCARGILL, - May 27. The • Southland Boxing Association staged a successful amateur tournament this evening in the presence of a large attendance. Among, the visiting contingent, from Dunedin, Hood (lightweight, and A. Lowe (lightweight), were successful. but B. Davis (middleweight), was defeated. The local boxers who won were ('. Gault ( middleweight), and 31. Burke (lightweight). A. Campbell (Oamaru), present New Zealand amateur heavyweight had a great fight with G. Silencer (Greenhills), the verdict going to the eluiniiiion by a fair margin of points. The bout was considered one of (lie best heavyweight contests seen liere lor some time. NOTES AND NEWS. Brian 31cCleary has definitely retired from boxing. That may seem to he very stale news to Canterbury people,, hut Brian has been talking lately of returning to the ring (says the Chr>stehur' , h Sun). However, his right, arm. injured some years ago, proves almost useless in defence in boxing, and so. on medical advice, he is not going on .with his intended comeback.
