WELLINGTON COUNTRY CLUB’S CHAMPIONSHIPS. HASTINGS WIN AIeYILLY SHIELD. (Press Association.) NAPIER, April 1. The Wellington Country Club’s championship athletic meeting and Ihe McVillv Shield competition were held at Ale Lean Park, Napier, today, and proved most successful, despite the wintry conditions. Competitors were present from Gisborne, Waipawa, Danncvirke, Mangtaniokn, Carterton and Palmerston North, besides local men from Hastings and Napier. The contests were keen, many thrilling races and splendid finishes being witnessed. The AlcVilly Challenge Shield was lost by the holders, the Kia- foa Club, Palmerston North, to Hie Hastings Club, whose points totalled 37. Napier were runners-up with 44, and Dannevirke third with one point behind. The previous holders were fourth with 38 points and then came Carterton 29, Waipawa 10, Gisborne 9, and Afangatanoka 9. A cup presented by Mrs. Annie Holden of Makotuku, for flic ladies’ re:av championship of Hawke’s BayPoverty Bay and the Centre was won bv Napier after a -splendid race with Hastings.
