John Sutherland, 49, of Whangarei, New Zealand, a recent arrival\in Sydney, formed the acquaintance of Denis Finn in the city, and listened attentively to a tall yarn about a cane farm in Queensland, which Finn was supposed to own. Finn induced Sutherland to advance money for implements on. a promise that ho would be employed there at £1 Is a day. Sutherland went to Brisbane, where lie discovered that ho had been duped, and was compelled to walk nearly the whole of the. way back to Sydney, owing to being “broke.” He told his story in tho City Police Court, and linn, who was described by the magistrate a? a heartless fellow, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
