ROWING
-GISBORNE CLUB
FINAL OF- FIRST -TRIAL FOURS
The worst possible;-river conditions prevailed last" evening' when the final of the Gisborne Rowing Club’s First Trial Fours was rowed. When IT. Hanlcey (str.), Alien, Somerville and Rooke and P. Foster .(str.) Sloan, A. Shaw, and Hay went to the post the "tide \was full and' the water “dead” and a southerly gale, accompanied by JieaVy f rain '-was blowing ••'straight up the river. Both crews got away nicely - together -and shot. the footbridge on even' terms and' then a long gruelling- race ensued, Hankey leading Foster by a canvas approaching Derby Street Bridge. At the bridge Hankey had slightly increased, his lead, and both boats headed down the straight for home. Here they struck the full blast of the southerly gale, and although both crews-were “all out”, the boats simply crawled along, each shipping con-siderable-water. -Hankey,, with a nice steady stroke, drew awav and won by a iength' and' a half, but due credit must go to Foster for the game fight lie put up against his far more experienced opponent.
