BOWLS.

GISBORNE CLUB,

. A large number of bowlers were present on the Club’s greens on Thursday, over fifty members and visitors taking part in the various matches and practice games. The weather was excellent! for bowls and the greens were never in better order. All the entries for the various ,Club competitions are closed and the draws have been made. In the Club Fours a new system was instituted' whereby the skips selected their own teams. This proved very satisfactory and the. teams selected are very evenly matched. The’results 'of the first round are as follows: Mathewson, Moncrieff, Cossey, Armstrong (s) v. Eowan, Collin, Stewart, Holmes (s)- 10; Smallbone, A. Hay (sub.), 'Nasmith, ’ Stephenson (s) 27 v. J'. Whitehead, Jones, Clarkson, T. A. Crawford (s) 23. This was a remarkable game, and on the lltli head Crawford led by 20 to 4. From this on Stephenson scored consistently (including three fives) finally winning by 4 points. Adair, Gandell (sub.), Fairley, Hueston (s) 23 v. dark, Dunbar, Adams, Seymour (s) 16; Johnson, Gandell, Crawshaw, Staff (s), a bye. The secjond round will be played next Thursday. , Ordinary games: H. Bright, McKeague, Barnsdale (s) 23 v. Sutton, Atkinson (Kanutia), Allan (s) 16; Johnson, Dodd, Crawshaw, Staff (s) 22 v. Primrose, J. Hay, Robertson, Sinclair (s) 20. After the above games were completed, further games were played _in which the experienced players mingled with the beginners, and if this practice is continued it should improve the play of the Club members generally. During the .afternoon a ballot for i new members was conducted and resulted in the following being elected: Active members; Messrs A. and J. M, Park; honorary, Messrs. G. L. Margoliouth, L. Balfour, and HV. Bell.

Champion Singles: This competition may now be commenced and the following is the draw for the first round: Zaffer v. Stephenson, Sinclair v. Staff, Collin v. Patterson, H. Bright v, Armstrong, Paltridge v. Sutton, Holmes v. Clark, Gambrill v. Beaver, Adams v. h. Bright, Dixon v.- Allan, Owing to the fact that it is necessary to find the winner of this competition as soon as ‘possible to represent the Club in the Champion of Champions Singles, members are asked to play their games promptly.
