WOMEN’S BEST.
ROOMS OFFICIALLY OPENED BY MAYOR ENTERPRISE OF ELECTROLUX LTD. The women’s free rest rooms, established and equipped by the Electrolux Ltd., in their premises in Peel street, were officially opened yesterday in the presence of a representative gathering of ladies. Tlie premises were declared open by the Mayor, Mr D. W. Coleman, and Mr W. D. Lysnar, M.P.. opened the firm’s business premises. The local representative of the firm, Mr Voss, expressed his pleasure in.handing over to the women of Gisborne the free rest room provided by his firm. The room was established, for the free use of the women of the town and district, so that they might feel they could use the premises without any sense of obligation. The premises would be maintained entirely by the company. He also expressed his thanks _ to Mrs Cuthbert. owner of the building, for her co-operation in having expensive alterations made to make the provision of the rest room possible. , Accepting the room on behalf or the Borough Council, the Mayor expressed appreciation of the firm s generosity and forethought. He humorously commented that it was very seldom the Council was given anything, and he frankly admitted that when the offer to provide the free rest- room was submitted to him ho viewed it- with suspicion, wondering what was required of the Council in return. After, discussing the scheme with Mr Voss, however, ho knew the offer was made in all sincerity and the premises were certainly a credit to the firm and to the town. That there was a strong feeling among a certain section of the town that- the Council should provide a municipal room, he knew, and personally his sympathies were in that direction, but as the law now stood the Council could not devote funds for that purpose. The rest room provided bv the firm, however, would in his opinion fill a very necessary need, and he hoped it would be tiie forerunner of a municipal building such as other towns , had provided. The illustration of the value of these premises should serve to stimulate the women of Gisborne to support the organisation endeavouring to raise funds for a municipal institution, so that the law now debarring any action in that direction could be amended. He pointed out that in taking over the premises the Council was not accepting any liability, the firm having undertaken to bear any establishment and maintenance expenses. Ho then declared the rest room open. Mrs Cuthbert removed the ribbons across the doorway of the premises amidst applause. Mr W. D. Lysnar declared the firm and new premises open,. commending them upon their enterprise and wishing them every success. The visitors inspected the premises and were entertained at afternoon tea. *
