GOOD SEASON IN CIRCUMSTANCES. V-; ~,, PRACTICALLY ON-CALL ON .. . GUARANTEE. . (Preeo Association.) NELSON, Nov. 8. Mr H. E. Stepiiens, London representative of the New Zealand Fruitontrol Board, 1 who is at present in Nelson district, addressing the growers on the result of the; past season’s operations, stated that the depressed state of trade in Britain and the largely increased supplies had meant that high prices were out of the question. Still New Zealand had secured from two shillings to three shillings a case above fruit from other countries. There would be practically no call on the Government guarantee. There had been a high standard, of grading. The prospects for next season he considered brighter due, mainly, to a lighter Australian crop. Ho thought it probable the heavy American carry-over would not affect the market to a great extent, as the demand was always for fresh fruit. ' Speaking of the Fruit Control Board’s policy, which, does riot in* elude price-fixing, and consists mainly in directing fruit to the best markets offering at the moment, Mr. Stephens said representatives 'from other countries had been specially sent to reexamine the New Zealand policy. All admitted the board- had instituted something new and something which was working extremely well. Two outstanding facts were that growers had been given legislative control of their own business and had a Government guarantee, which enabled growers to maintain their principle of independence. All were agreed the Government guarantee made theControl Board’s policy possible. The Prince of : Wales Iliad sent greetings to the New Zealand growers when presented with the millionth export case last season. LONDON TALLOW SALES. doited Press Assn, by El. Tel.
