PALACE THEATRE,
“ANNA KARENINA.”
A cat may look at a king, as the old proverb goes, hut it’s not every screen star who can play with a prince. John Gilbert and Greta Garbo had this unique experience in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s Spectacular filmisation of Tolstoi’s immortal classic now screening at the Palace. In fact, they not only play with a prince, in the person of Prince Youcca Troubetzkoy, s who enacted one of Golbert’s staff officers in the production, but also with two retired Russian generals, General Michael Pleschkoff,. former distinguished military leader under the Czar, and General Theodore Lodi, once commander of the Russian Imperial Guard. Both generals fled Russia when the revolution broke out, and became screen actors. The new production is a vivid picture of Russia before the revolution, at the height oi ; .the glory of its aristocracy. Brilliant uniforms, gay costumes ; ; and gorgeous settings mark the production as incidental in the vivid drama of Anna Karenina, the .woman who all .for . love, and, the sinister fate-that dogged" her happiness. Gilbert plays , the role of Count Vronsky, the lover, and Miss Garbo the tragic Anna in the story. George Fawcett'is Teen as the Grand Duke. Brandon - Hurst as Count Karenin, the husband, and Philippe De Lacy). Emily Fitzroy and many others of note are in the cast. Among the spec tacular details in the new picture are the manoeuvres of the Russian guard, the spectacular horse manoeuvres, and the brilliant social functions and cathedral scenes.
