CONCERT. AT MANGAPAPA

AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS

AVith such an attractive and varied programme offering to the public it was not surprising to see the Oddfellows Hall at Mangapapa packed to. capacity last evening when a concert was given in aid of funds for., Knox Church. V ' '/ < The prograipme comprised varied ■' items by the best Gisborne talent, moat of'the performers being recent competition winners and the large audience was enthusiastic in its appreciation of tlie performers’ efforts. Such an outstanding programme has rarely been given in Gisborne arid the high standard of the items may be judged by the fact that every one was encored without exception and every performer generously responded. Credit for the outstanding success is due solely to the invaluable work of Mrs. G. AVitters, who was responsible for, tlie staging of tlie entertainment.

Before the concluding item, the Rev. O. H. Lowden, thanked Mrs Witters and complimented the performers on the excellence of the programme. The speaker said Knox Church was indeed fortunate in having Airs AVitters to help them, and the Church wbuld benefit considerably as the result of the concert. The hall was beautifully decorated and many complimentary remarks were passed concerning the decorations. Stretching from one end of the hall to the other were multicolored streamers while the stage was backed, by beautiful bamboo palms and hugo bowls of beautiful irises and lilies, choice roses being intermingled to form a charming background for the pretty frocks worn by the performers. At the conclusion of each item, every lady performer was handed a handsome' bouquet, while the younger performers were each presented with a hugo box of sweets.

During the evening songs were givon by Mias J. Hill, ‘Nightfall at Sea”, Joyce - Witters “Daddy and Babsv” ; song m costume Heather Pirie “The Second Minuet”; Mrs F. Auld “Morning and You”; Miss Margaret Corson “Break of Day”; duet in costume, Misses Denton, “The Old Rustic Bridge”; Mrs S. Adair “Give Mo Youth and A Day”; duet, Miss Margaret Corson and Mr R. Allan, “One Fleeting Hour” • Ml F. Neil, “The Boat Song”;; Miss Muriel Mortimer, “Mumps”; Miss Monica McKay and Mr R. McKay. '.“AVaiata Poi”' accompanied by the ukelejo. A recitation was . given by Gretcnen Kane, entitled, “Grandma’s Angel”. Pianoforte solos were played by Mass Kathleen Adair end Miss A. ’ Adair, while piano duets were given by Misses June Adaii and Mavis Gunn, “Autumn Idyll” ; and “Ruy Bias” by Misses T, and M. Coop. A violin solo was contributed by Miss Mavis Holmes arid a whistling solo by Air , Hunter AVitters, and a character dance “Gretchen” by Joy Scaly. One of the features of the entertainment Was a demonstration by Miss Bthne Paltridge and her pupils, Miss Paltridge and Joan Maddock being seen to advantage in tumbling and acrobatic performances. Miss Y. Paltridge appeared in a classic dance, Miss S. Munro in a. toe dance, Aliss AA 7 . Paltridge in a Grecian lance, and Miss Joan Mellor in a fancy dance.
