STREAM OF LAVA STILL MOVING. MASCALI IN; DANGER. ROPE PRAYING FOR CESSATION United .Press .Assn. "by’ Bl.lTjpL_CtalOTlßji< - (Australian Press Assn.l • (Received Npv. 7, 11.10 p.m.) CATANIA, Nov. 6. The Etna eruption is still causing alarming and terrifying explosions and subterranean rumblings. Showers of ashes, cinders and incandescent stones continue, accompanied bjy vari-colored ) flames, suggesting a gigantic fireworks display. One enormous explosion in the afternoon .shook the whole region. Hundreds of small craters of varying activity have broken out. Professor Pronti, director of Etna Observatory, 'explains that this was due to .'lava travelling several miles from the'inain craters and seeking an outlet. A great lava stream is now within half a rnije of Mascali, whose population of 10,090 has completely evacuated the town, with the assistance of troops,, Fascist militia, the civil authorities and priests. The lava has destroyed all communications and bridges, including a ninety-foot iron rail bridge, which was contorted as if it were of-straw. Another lava stream is advancing several . hundred feet hourly and is threatening Giarr’e, which, with neighboring villages, have been evacuated. Processions' carrying relies of St. Vitus and images of St. Leonard alternately facing the lava and praying for Divine intervention are retreating as the red hot stream approaches. ROME, Nov. 6.
The Pope is most anxious about tho Etna situation and has sent a message to the sufferers that he is praying for the cessation of the lava flow.
