KEEPING IN TOUCH.

BYRD’S ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION WEEKLY NEWS BULLETINS Commander Richard Byrd’s expedition. now aboard the base ship, City of New York, en route for New Zealand, is making full use of wireless transmission to break down the barriers of space and to keep in touch with the friends and events they have left behind them. Throughout their trip, they will receive weekly bulletins, over the air, from KDKA, the Pittsburgh station, these being sent out at 11 p.m. every Saturday', which corresponds to 3.30 p.m. Sunday, N.Z. time.

The first of the weekly series of broadcasts was transmitted last week-end. when it was clearly received by Mr. It. J. Patty, of Gisborne, who communicated the success of the experiment to Mr Alex Reid, the Montreal amateur , of station 2BE, who then forwarded Mr Patty’s message to KDKA. This new feature has been organised by Mr Geo* A. Wendt, of the Canadian Westinghouse Co., Ltd., who has already gained great success with his Arctic broadcasts. The initial programme extended over two hours and was largely made up of personal greetings and messages from friends of the expedition’s personnel. Mr. Wendt also gave details regarding the scheme then being tried out and expressed especial thanks to Messrs Reid and Patty for their association in perfecting the arrangements.
