WEAR A POPPY.
STREET ,SALE TO-DAY
JT’S “POPPY DAY” TO-DAY
Each, wearer of the little red. emblem to-day will be .paying a silent but eloquent tribute to the heroes of Anzac and incidentally helping to alleviate the distress -of ex-service-men and families‘who. need: it; There should be a generous response tc the appeal for the proceeds of the safe of poppies will be devoted to'relieving the position of ex-soldiers in this district. The local sale lias been organised practically without expense, all assistance ■ required for the disposal of the poppies having been ottered voluntarily, while the depot, a shop in Majestic Theatre , buildings from which the street sale will be directed has been placed at the disposal of the Bi.S.A. gratis. It has been mentioned that last year’s Poppy Day sale returned over £9O to the R.S.A., and that this sum inaugurated a campaign of relief among ex-servicemen which eventually resulted in the distribution of about £l?oo_in‘ wages-aiid direct relief to families of unemployed returned soldiers. To those who have noted the great improvements effected by the work about the town thus initiated, the Poppy Day funds' must represent a source of much good. The executive of the Gisborne R.S.A., which has supervised the sales arrangements, is assured of the genuine sympathy of - the residents of 'Gisborne and Poverty Bay, and it is. gratifying,' no> doubt, to learn that the funds raised to-day will have a local' application in the public service. Country centres have been provided with supplies of , poppies, and representatives of the will forward the sales in * the country and on the Coast. It is well to remember that the artificial blodms from which the day takes its name are made in Britain, by British •soldiers who were rendered permanently unfit by war injuries. '
