JAPANESE DEER.
GOOD SPORT IX! ICAIMANAWA RANGES. SPORTSMAN’S EXCITING EXPERIENCE. (Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, April 20. Four Auckland men who recently returned from a deer-stalking expedition in the Kaimanawa ranges, brought back the heads of six red deer and three Japanese bucks. They spent over two weeks in the ranges and found them exceedingly rough. Their advice to anyone making the trip is to be prepared for hard travelling and to be in the best- physical condition. The first Japanese buck shot by the party was the fifth of the species secured in the Dominion. Both Japanese and red deer appeared to be very scarce, but the specimens seen and shot were in perfect condition. Darkness overtook one of the sportsmen when hg was returning to camp one day. and he was forced to spend the night in the bush. His experience was an unenviable one, because wild pigs gathered round the camp fire, and the benighted one had to fire two shots to frighten them away. He was also troubled with bush rats.
