LODER CUP.
NOT A„ NATIONAL TROPHY. (Special to the Times.) 1 WELLINGTON, April 20. Auckland is to be the first holder of the Loder Cup, the tropin l ' donated to the Dominion by Mr Gerald Loder, President of the Agricultural Society of England in 1926 for the fostering of interest in horticulture. The New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, at first hoped to make the competition for the Cup a national one, but the scheme which they prepared was abandoned when the Minister of Agriculture told them that they could not hope for the Government to bear the annual cost of judging a national competition. Consequently, the competition has been changed to one of a provincial nature and Auckland is to be the scene of the first contest. Following that, the trophy will be allotted to a South Island centre.
The proposals now before the Institute of Horticulture are that the cupi shall be competed for under flower-show conditions: that is, with groups of flowers and plants properly displayed and labelled, and that the competition shall take place in the four main centres annually, and in rotation. .The judging will be arranged for .by the horticultural society responsible for the cup for any particular year and the judge will be selected from a list which the Institute now has in preparation for all classes of flowers and plants.
